For an au pair stay, health insurance is an important asset. Everyone being different, each country having it’s own rules, it is very important to be insured by a company that adapts the cover to both the au pairs and the families.

Some French insurances have adapted with the au pair agencies a specific product. These insurances are able to cover young people coming from anywhere in the World and French applicants who go abroad.

Most insurances offer the following guarantees: health and accident medical cover, emergency tooth care, repatriation in case of illness, accident or death, Personal Civil Liability * (including damage towards the children for some insurances), payment of a capital in case of disability, death, luggage loss or damage. A small allowance can be paid to cover part of accommodation expenses (hotel) when an au pair has to be relocated in a new host family (for French applicants travelling abroad) or an allowance can be paid to the French host family if their au pair is hospitalized during her stay in France. Some insurances cover ski and other hazardous sports.
*Personal Civil Liability covers all material or immaterial damage caused to a third party. From the moment an au pair lives with a family, for most insurances, she is no longer considered as a third party, hence the importance to apply through a specialized company covering these stays.

The insurance has to be subscribed BEFORE the beginning of the stay, so that the au pair is covered from the moment she leaves her own home. If the person forgets to subscribe before the departure, alternative solutions can be proposed.
